Is This a Good Time to Buy a Car?

Is This a Good Time to Buy a Car?

“The economy is getting better” or “The economy is getting worse” is the message most Americans are getting when they watch the news or go online. The mixed messages in the media are largely based on different interpretations of the same data, but skewed according to what political party the journalist feels is better. Those mixed signals are making many people think that now may not be a good time to buy a car, that they will wait until after the national election to see who wins. There are reasons, however, that waiting is not the best idea.

Consider that because of the uncertainty surrounding the state of the economy businesses are extending programs and discounts to encourage buyers to buy now. Automotive manufacturers like Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, Toyota, Nissan and others are producing huge numbers of vehicles now to make up for downtime they experienced when their factories were shut down earlier this year. Those vehicles need to be sold, especially as many vehicles are switching over from 2020 models to 2021. Factory rebates and financing incentives usually reserved for the end of the year are being rolled out including long term promotional rates as low as zero percent.

Along with the manufacturers many automotive dealerships are becoming stocked or even overstocked with vehicles. Just like the automotive manufacturers dealerships need to find ways to sell the vehicles that are piling up on their lots. That means making every sale possible throughout the months leading up to the November election. Dealerships like Melloy Chevrolet, Melloy Ford, and Melloy Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Los Lunas, New Mexico are motivated to make every sale possible right now. With the chance to offer huge manufacturer rebates and dealer discounts and giving many buyers the option to not make a payment until 2021 dealers like Melloy Auto Group Los Lunas are accepting all reasonable offers.

Customers that are thinking about purchasing a vehicle in the near future should be considering that the current economic uncertainty is creating the best time to buy a new car, truck or SUV. Just like purchasing stocks or homes when prices are down, smart buyers understand that the best time to buy a car is right now. Just like those other investment opportunities a chance like this does not wait and may not present itself again.

So is this a good time to buy a car? Yes it is.

The Melloy Auto Group in Los Lunas, New Mexico, consisting of Melloy Ford, Melloy Chevrolet, and Melloy Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram is a local, trusted, and family owned dealership that offers New Vehicles Sales, Factory Authorized Service and Parts, and Used Vehicles Sales of Ford, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, Lincoln, Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, and all other brands. Vehicle Maintenance 101 – Oil

Vehicle Maintenance 101 – Oil

Regular oil changes can help optimize the performance and fuel economy of your car, truck, or SUV. Many older-model vehicles, including those manufactured without or before the creation of the Oil Life Monitoring System, require oil changes at 3,000-mile intervals. However, thanks to advances in engine and engine oil technologies, newer models can have a longer range between oil changes.

It’s a good idea to periodically check your oil level. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm, at normal operating temperature, and the vehicle must be on level ground. Always consult your vehicle’s owner manual for the proper procedure to check your oil level. You’ll get a more accurate dipstick reading by following those instructions.

Q: What do I need to do when my “Change Engine Oil Soon” message displays?

A: When the “Change Engine Oil Soon” message appears, oil change service is necessary for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles.Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change is indicated can vary considerably.  For the oil life system to work properly, the system must be reset every time the oil is changed.

Q: How can I be sure to get the correct type of motor oil for my vehicle?

A:  Consult your vehicle’s owners manual to be sure you get the proper oil for your vehicle. For 2011 or newer vehicles, full synthetic oil is the recommended oil specification over conventional motor oil include because of synthetic oil’s improved oil performance and protection, increased piston cleanliness, reduced oil consumption, and greater viscosity control.

Q: Does regularly changing my oil filter help with the life of my engine?

A: Yes, because it helps ensure your engine is lubricated with clean oil which can help provide optimal engine performance. See your vehicle owner’s manual for the recommended oil change interval, or follow the oil life monitoring system, if equipped.

Q: Do I need a new filter every time I get an oil change?

A: Yes, having your oil and oil filter changed, at least as often as recommended by the manufacturer, is important.

Car Buying 101 – New or Used?

Car Buying 101 – New or Used?

There is nothing like that new car smell, it is fresh and shiny so the answer to buy new or used is easy right? That depends on several factors and there may be a third, better choice.

For many customers the choice between new and used comes down to the basic question of why they are considering buying a vehicle, is it to get the latest model or because of a new innovative feature? (like when adaptive cruise control came out many customers wanted to get a vehicle with that feature)

So sometimes a new car makes sense. In some cases customers use the factory rebates to help payoff their current vehicle. Some customers want to lease their vehicles so in most cases new car leasing programs are more attractive to those buyers. Many customers just want to buy a new car because of the factory warranty sometimes that include scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance.

But for some customers looking at a used car makes sense. Many customers are interested in purchasing expensive luxury vehicles but dont like the price tag so they look for those same vehicles that are a few years older. Some customers prefer to purchase used vehicles perhaps as a first car for a teenager in the house because of insurance rates or other reasons.

Maybe there is a third, better choice. Several years ago vehicle manufacturers came up with the Certified Pre Owned program. Certified Pre Owned vehicles are usually required to be less than 4 years old, miles under 50,000, free of large body damage, clean CarFax histories, and pass an extensive Certification Inspection. For customers that are not sure whether to purchase a new or used vehicle a Certified Pre Owned vehicle may be the answer. Here are some of the benefits of each Certified program:

Ford Certified Pre Owned

In addition to peace of mind, each Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle comes with these benefits:
• Warranty – In addition to 12-month/12,000-mile Comprehensive Limited Warranty coverage, every Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle also comes with 7-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty coverage (ask your dealer for warranty details).
• Roadside Assistance – Roadside Assistance is offered for the full duration of the Limited Warranty coverage. That’s 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in case of a breakdown, blowout or bad weather. Roadside Assistance includes: Travel expense reimbursement of up to $1,000 for up to five days of lodging, meals and rental vehicle – Destination expense assistance of up to $75 to cover the emergency cost of a taxi, shuttle or rental car to reach your destination – Rental car reimbursement of up to $30 per day for up to five days if the vehicle requires overnight mechanical repairs
• 172-Point Inspection – Before any vehicle can be called a Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, it must pass a 172-point inspection. Factory-trained technicians recondition any component that does not meet program standards, or they replace it with only new Ford Motorcraft® or Ford Authorized Remanufactured Parts. Ask your dealer for a copy of the Vehicle Inspection Checklist.
• Vehicle History Report – You’ll definitely know your vehicle’s history when you purchase a Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. As part of the 172-point inspection process, a Vehicle History Report is run to identify any vehicle that does not meet Ford Certified Pre-Owned standards. Ask your dealer for a copy of this report.

Vehicle Maintenance 101 – Tires

Vehicle Maintenance 101 – Tires

Tires are one of the most important parts that contribute to the safety of your vehicle. Having worn and uneven tires can lead to a blowout or loss of vehicle control, especially in wet or icy weather. We want you to be safe and so we want to offer you some easy tips on your tires, Tire Tips I guess we could have called this.

A quick and easy way to check your tire wear is with a tread-depth gauge. If you happen to have one that is easy, if you don’t come see our service department or you can also use a penny. Yep, just place a penny upside down in between the tire tread and if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the treads are worn and tire replacement is needed.

Tires also come with tread wear indicators, they are rubber cross sections in the tire tread that appear when the tires only have 2/32” or less of tread remaining. Other trouble signs on your tires are:

  • You can see three or more tread wear indicators around the tire
  • The tire cord or fabric is showing through the rubber
  • The tire tread or sidewall is cracked, cut, or snagged deep enough to show cord or fabric
  • The tire has a bulge or split
  • The tire has a puncture, cut, or other damage that can’t be repaired correctly

Proper wheel alignment and tire rotation is key to prolonging the life of your tires. If your vehicle is misaligned, it can cause your tires to wear unevenly, and you may experience handling problems such as pulling or abnormal vibration. Consider letting us do a wheel alignment check if there is unusual tire wear or the vehicle is significantly pulling to one side or the other. A tire that is out of balance often affects ride quality and can shorten the life of tires, bearings, shocks, and other suspension components. If the vehicle is vibrating when driving on a smooth road, the tires and wheels may need to be rebalanced.

Check your tires at least once a month when the tires are cold, meaning the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours or no more than 1 mile. The Tire Information Label located on the inside of your doorframe has the recommended cold tire pressure for your vehicle. Inflation pressure maintenance of tires is critical for overall tire and vehicle performance. Maintaining the correct inflation pressure allows the tire to perform as intended, including for comfort, fuel economy, stopping distance, cornering, traction, tread wear, and noise.

Car Buying 101 – Trade Value

Car Buying 101 – Trade Value

One of the most common questions asked of car dealers is “what is my trade worth?” The real answer to that question is not as much as you want, but there are two simple things that you can do to get thousands more for your trade.

First, it is important to understand how a dealership arrives at a your trade value. Most dealerships will look at at least one value guide (common guides are KBB, NADA, Black Book, and MMR) when appraising your trade while some dealerships will look at several sources by using specialized appraisal software or apps. Dealerships also look at market demand because just like every other retail business inventory turnover, how quickly inventory is sold, is an important factor in the success of the business. That means that if your trade is in high demand the dealership may pay much more for it.

Regardless of what your particular dealership uses remember one important fact: Used vehicle values are subjective, that means regardless of what the value guide says a vehicle is worth, the real value comes from the person appraising your vehicle.

Because the value you receive for your trade is determined by the appraiser there are things you can do to get thousands more for your vehicle trade:

1. Regular maintenance. Even something as simple as regular oil changes will often get you thousands more for your trade. Remember that maintenance and service visits to most dealerships are now reported to vehicle history sites such as Carfax and Autocheck which will be seen by your appraiser.

2. Clean your vehicle regularly. When you keep your vehicle clean it shows during the appraisal because the paint is in better condition, the interior fabric or leather is in better condition, and the overall appearance of the vehicle is more pleasing. There is a huge difference between the value of a clean and dirty car.

The good news is that Melloy Los Lunas dealerships have agreed to offer every customer above fair market value for trade in vehicles, which means one less thing you have to worry about when purchasing your vehicle through the Melloy Auto Group Los Lunas.

Car Buying 101 – Credit

Car Buying 101 – Credit

Regardless of the vehicle you are searching for, there are certain things that we feel like all car buyers should know. Some might say these are secrets but we feel like that the vehicle purchase experience is made more transparent if both sides, dealer and customer begin the process with some common shared knowledge.

First, lets have a clear understanding of one of the most important factors in a car purchase for most, credit. For over a third of the US population that means dealing with “bad” credit* which is widely considered to be a credit rating under 600.

We understand that a person is not defined by a credit score however vehicle loan payments are. Many dealerships claim that they have special programs for all credit profiles but before you choose a dealership just because they claim to have guaranteed credit approval, make sure they know how to use that program. Programs targeted at certain credit profiles should be there to help however there are many complexities that the dealer you choose should know how to best use them for your benefit.

There are some steps that you can take if you are considering purchasing a vehicle that will improve that include: paying your bills on time, paying off or settling collection accounts, reducing or increasing the open accounts you have (depending on your situation), consolidating higher interest rate credit cards into a single lower interest loan. You can look at numerous articles that will assist you in improving your credit score such as this one https://clark.com/credit/5-sneaky-ways-to-increase-your-credit-score/

If you need a vehicle right away your Melloy Los Lunas dealer is ready to serve you, regardless of credit. We do offer programs that will help you finance your next vehicle regardless of your past credit history.
