Where Are the Cars?

If you have visited any new car dealership in the country recently you have noticed that there seems to be less cars on the lot, it is not your imagination. New car dealerships are experiencing a combination of increased demand and lower supply. Manufacturers like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, etc… are all experiencing effects from a worldwide shortage of electronic computer chips. The shortage all began with COVID shutting down most car dealerships and production plants last year at the same time that demand for computers and networking equipment surged as people started working from home. Chip manufacturers shifted production to those home computer products and away from the chips necessary to produce vehicles.

Those computer chips in vehicles control most of the infotainment systems modern vehicles are equipped with along with many vital engine controls. Car companies are currently building vehicles but many cannot be delivered to dealers until those chips arrive and are installed in the built vehicles. This has caused a new vehicle shortage, especially in trucks and SUV’s that are what most consumers are shopping for. So is this a good time to buy a car? Consider some specific questions in that regard.

Is this a good time to buy a car? The short answer is yes. Manufacturers are predicting continued vehicle shortages possibly through the end of the year, especially those vehicles with equipment most consumers are demanding such as navigation, Apple Car Play integration and advanced safety technologies like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and forward collision mitigation. That means that if you find a vehicle that fits your needs you need to act fast and purchase it because someone else is looking for those features as well. Another factor that has been driving new vehicle purchases is lower interest rates that are available now but may rise over the next few months so if you find a vehicle this is the perfect time to take advantage of those lower interest rates.

What if I can’t find a car I want? Another avenue to consider if you need a vehicle is that manufacturers are giving build priorities to vehicles that are ordered by consumers. If you need or want specific items on your vehicle now is the perfect time to visit your local dealership and explore the option of ordering a vehicle. It may take a couple of months to arrive but ordering allows you to lock in current rebates and in some cases even secure today’s available low interest rates.

Are used vehicles a good option right now? The shortage of new vehicles has moved many consumers into the used vehicle market which has also had an effect on availability. That higher demand for preowned vehicles has sent dealerships back to the automotive auctions accross the country which had been slowed by COVID over the past year but even at those auctions the supply of used vehicles has not kept up with demand. So the same logic applies to used vehicles, if you find a vehicle that fits your needs and wants on a dealership’s lot you should not wait to purchase it. Vehicles in high demand such as used trucks and SUV’s are only on dealer lots for a few days as opposed to a few weeks so if you see it, buy it to get what you want and take advantage of the bank’s current low interest rates.

Is this a good time to sell my vehicle? Yes, if you have a vehicle you want to sell this is perhaps the best time in history to sell it, especially if it is a vehicle with high demand like trucks and SUV’s, although cars are also brining historic high values at auctions so your local dealership would be competitive on anything you have to sell.

Open on Sunday

For several months we have had customers asking in all of our stores about opening our dealerships here in Los Lunas on Sunday

We have been all over the state looking for Ford, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, or Chevrolet stores that are open on Sunday and while some dealerships’ sales departments are open we could not find any that offered both sales and service on Sunday. So that became our goal.

Over the past few months we have been expanding our sales and service teams with a goal of getting to a point we could make an announcement like today.

Starting this weekend, all three of our stores will be open seven days a week and that includes Sales and Service. We are excited about offering extended hours for our customers.

Many of our customers work all week, many working parts of six days a week, plus with school schedules changing so much parents that used to have time when children were at school to come and get oil changes and maintenance many of our customers just run out of time during the week.

So now, at Melloy Chevrolet, Melloy Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, and Melloy Ford we will be here for our customers seven days a week.

As we roll out this program we are going to be open from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. So if you need an oil change or maintenance on your current vehicle we will have technicians available here to help you. If you are interested in shopping for a new vehicle our sales teams will be here to answer your questions. These hours are in addition to our normal service hours from 7am to 6pm Monday through Friday and from 8am to 5pm on Saturday.

Also, we are happy to announce our Sunday service specials that include a standard oil change and vehicle inspection for as low as $18.95, a complementary pit stop vehicle inspection, and as we roll into spring we are also offering a free air conditioning system check.

We are excited about this announcement and hope that as life continues to get back to normal this expanded service and sales schedule will help our customers.

What kind of service will you offer on Sunday?

We are focused on normal lube and maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and like services but even though we will be working with a limited staff if there are other more involved repairs needed we welcome you to come in on Sunday and speak with one of our Service Advisors.

Will your retail parts department be open?

At this time we will have a limited parts staff here to provide our technicians with what they need but our retail parts counters will not be open. As we continue to expand our parts and service staff we may update our Retail Parts Counter hours as well.

Do I need an appointment to get service on Sunday?

The short answer to that is no, although we always feel making an appointment prior to your visit is good we will do our best to accommodate walk in service customers on Sunday.

If we wanted to buy a vehicle can we arrange financing on Sunday?

Yes. Most of our retail lenders such as Ford Motor Credit, GM Financial, and Chrysler Capital are open and provide approvals on Sunday, even some of the local credit unions approve applications on Sundays so if you are looking to purchase a vehicle we can handle the entire process for you.

What were the hours again on Sunday?

We will be open from 10am to 4pm.

Regular oil changes can help optimize the performance and fuel economy of your car, truck, or SUV. Many older-model vehicles, including those manufactured without or before the creation of the Oil Life Monitoring System, require oil changes at 3,000-mile intervals. However, thanks to advances in engine and engine oil technologies, newer models can have a longer range between oil changes.

It’s a good idea to periodically check your oil level. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm, at normal operating temperature, and the vehicle must be on level ground. Always consult your vehicle’s owner manual for the proper procedure to check your oil level. You’ll get a more accurate dipstick reading by following those instructions.

Q: What do I need to do when my “Change Engine Oil Soon” message displays?

A: When the “Change Engine Oil Soon” message appears, oil change service is necessary for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles.Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change is indicated can vary considerably.  For the oil life system to work properly, the system must be reset every time the oil is changed.

Q: How can I be sure to get the correct type of motor oil for my vehicle?

There is nothing like that new car smell, it is fresh and shiny so the answer to buy new or used is easy right? That depends on several factors and there may be a third, better choice.

For many customers the choice between new and used comes down to the basic question of why they are considering buying a vehicle, is it to get the latest model or because of a new innovative feature? (like when adaptive cruise control came out many customers wanted to get a vehicle with that feature)

So sometimes a new car makes sense. In some cases customers use the factory rebates to help payoff their current vehicle. Some customers want to lease their vehicles so in most cases new car leasing programs are more attractive to those buyers. Many customers just want to buy a new car because of the factory warranty sometimes that include scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance.

But for some customers looking at a used car makes sense. Many customers are interested in purchasing expensive luxury vehicles but dont like the price tag so they look for those same vehicles that are a few years older. Some customers prefer to purchase used vehicles perhaps as a first car for a teenager in the house because of insurance rates or other reasons.
